Following Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, manager Erik ten Hag commended three players for their performances on the pitch.
In the final game of 2023, the Red Devils had a lackluster first half, with goalkeeper Matt Turner having little involvement.
However, the team showed improvement in the second half, displaying better movement in the attacking third.
Although Forest took the lead in the 64th minute, United quickly responded with an equalizer.
A mistake from Turner provided the ball to Garnacho, who swiftly passed it to Marcus Rashford, resulting in a precise finish for the goal.
Despite Rashford’s contribution, it wasn’t enough to secure a point, as Morgan Gibbs-White netted the winner for Forest in the 82nd minute.
Christian Eriksen missed a golden opportunity to level the score in the final moments of the game.
In his post-match comments, Ten Hag acknowledged the enhanced performance in the second half.
He specifically praised Amad Diallo, who came off the bench to replace Antony, describing his contribution as ‘really good.’
Additionally, Ten Hag highlighted Garnacho’s ‘very good game’ and applauded Rashford’s goal, stating, “In the second half, they [the attackers] were in the match.”
The defeat marked United’s 14th loss of the season, currently placing them seventh in the league.
The team faces the possibility of dropping to ninth if Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion secure victories in their respective games.
Despite the challenging season, there is optimism for improvement in 2024 as key players, including Mason Mount, Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Tyrell Malacia, are expected to return to action next month.
Mason Mount, recovering from a calf injury, has already resumed training.
