Erik ten Hag anticipates a boost in Manchester United’s squad with the return of five injured players in January, viewing their comebacks as equivalent to new signings for the crucial second half of the season.

Expected to return next month are Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Harry Maguire.

Malacia underwent two knee surgeries, sidelining him since July, while Martinez faced a metatarsal issue since September.

Casemiro has been absent since November 1 due to a hamstring problem, Mason Mount sustained a calf injury last month, and Harry Maguire has missed the last three games with a groin strain.

Ten Hag expressed optimism about the upcoming months, stating, “When the players return and now the luck is a little bit on our side in the matter of injuries, then we have five or six new signings in January.”

Acknowledging Andre Onana’s expected absence for up to six games due to his Africa Cup of Nations call-up, Ten Hag noted the squad’s preparedness for such scenarios.

United signed Onana from Inter Milan under the assumption his international career had ended.

As for potential contract extensions for players nearing the final six months of their deals, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Hannibal Mejbri, and Anthony Martial, Ten Hag did not provide clarity.

While Martial is currently unavailable due to illness, discussions with players and agents are ongoing, and internal processes are being managed between the club and individuals.
